Moshe Feldenkrais,Yochanan Rywerant: The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais Method

Description

The Feldenkrais Method: Teaching By Handling is a presentation of the system of Functional Integration devised by the Israeli scientist Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais. The Feldenkrais system is a way of handling the body by communicating specific sensations to the central nervous system in order to improve the functions of the motor-system. Functional Integration is unique in that it evokes changes in the human brain at a level heretofore thought unachievable by any known educational technique: muscular tonicity-even spasticity-is actually modified, the range of movement is enhanced, movement becomes more coordinated, and the overall efficiency and comfort of muscular functioning is increased. In The Feldenkrais Method, learn how the author has devised a framework for understanding an immensely subtle and elusive technique for human change.

Nautilus Book Award Winner - Gold This reference gives a quick and authoritative summary of the key concepts of DDD. It is not meant as a learning introduction to the subject. Eric Evans' original book and a handful of others explain DDD in depth from different perspectives. On the other hand, we often need to scan a topic quickly or get the gist of a particular pattern. That is the purpose of this reference. It is complementary to the more discursive books. Simple and counterintuitive, this extraordinary new diet is changing the way the world thinks about Echo Come Home free epub weight loss-one success story at a time. He writes about his years at the Sun-Times, his colorful newspaper friends, and his life-changing collaboration with Gene Siskel. He remembers his friendships with Studs Terkel, Mike Royko, Oprah Winfrey, and Russ Meyer (for whom he wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and an ill-fated Sex Pistols movie). He shares his insights into movie stars and directors like John Wayne, Werner Herzog, and Martin Scorsese. This is a story that only Roger Ebert could tell. Filled with the same deep insight, dry wit, and sharp observations that his readers have long cherished, this is more than a memoir-it is a singular, warm-hearted, inspiring look at life itself.

Eilean Hooper-Greenhill: Museums and the Shaping of Knowledge

Museums and the Shaping of Knowledge

Description

Museums have been active in shaping knowledge over the last six hundred years. Yet what is their function within today's society? At the present time, when funding is becoming increasingly scarce, difficult questions are being asked about the justification of museums. Museums and the Shaping of Knowledge presents a critical survey of major changes in current assumptions about the nature of museums. Through the examination of case studies, Eilean Hooper-Greenhill reveals a variety of different roles for museums in the production and shaping of knowledge. Today, museums are once again organising their spaces and collections to present themselves as environments for experimental and self-directed learning.

Thomas Merton: Zen and the Birds of Appetite

Zen and the Birds of Appetite

Description

"Zen enriches no one," Thomas Merton provocatively writes in his opening statement to Zen and the Birds of Appetite--one of the last books to be published before his death in 1968. "There is no body to be found. The birds may come and circle for a while... but they soon go elsewhere. When they are gone, the 'nothing, ' the 'no-body' that was there, suddenly appears. That is Zen. It was there all the time but the scavengers missed it, because it was not their kind of prey." This gets at the humor, paradox, and joy that one feels in Merton's discoveries of Zen during the last years of his life, a joy very much present in this collection of essays. Exploring the relationship between Christianity and Zen, especially through his dialogue with the great Zen teacher D.T. Suzuki, the book makes an excellent introduction to a comparative study of these two traditions, as well as giving the reader a strong taste of the mature Merton. Never does one feel him losing his own faith in these pages; rather one feels that faith getting deeply clarified and affirmed. Just as the body of "Zen" cannot be found by the scavengers, so too, Merton suggests, with the eternal truth of Christ

In the second collection of The Best Digital Marketing Campaigns in the World, bestselling author Damian Ryan presents an international showcase of the most successful digital marketing campaigns in recent history. Covering a wide range of world-class, award-winning campaigns from brands such as Activia; Red Bull; Heinz; Harley Davidson; O2; Peugeot; Nike; Samsung; and UEFA and agencies including Tribal DDB; Scholz and Volkmer; Red Bee; Bell Pottinger Wired; We Are Social; and Symbio Digital, this is an inspirational showcase of digital creativity and a must-read for everyone working in marketing and advertising.

I Love You All Day Long: Place & Play

Description

When she was little more than a pup, Kaala, born of mixed blood and nearly killed for it, found herself irresistibly drawn to the forbidden humans. She shattered the rules of the valley, exposing the lies hidden beneath. Now, responsibility for the consequences rests with her. In part two of The Wolf Chronicles, Kaala and the human girl she has befriended must find a way for the wolves and humans of the valley to live in harmony. If they succeed, Kaala will finally prove herself worthy of her pack. If they fail, every wolf and human in the valley will die. This Hackett edition, first published in 1981, is an unabridged and unaltered republication of the seventh (1907) edition as published by Macmillan and Company, Limited. From the forward by John Rawls: In the utilitarian tradition Henry Sidgwick (1838-1900) has an important place. His fundamental work, The Methods of Ethics (first edition 1874, seventh and last edition 1907, here reprinted), is the clearest and most accessible formulation of what we may call 'the classical utilitarian doctorine.' This I Love You All Day Long: Place & Play download epub classical doctrine holds that the ultimate moral end of social and individual action is the greatest net sum of the happiness of all sentient beings. Happinesss is specified (as positive or negative) by the net balance of pleasure over pain, or, as Sidgwick preferred to say, as the net balance of agreeable over disagreeable consciousness...

The Mammoth Book of Alternate Histories

Description

Every short story in this wonderfully varied collection has one thing in common: each features some alteration in history, some divergence from historical reality, which results in a world very different from the one we know today. As well as original stories specially commissioned from bestselling writers such as James Morrow, Stephen Baxter and Ken MacLeod, there are genre classics such as Kim Stanley Robinson's story of how World War II atomic bomber the Enola Gay, having crashed on a training flight, is replaced by the Lucky Strike with profoundly different consequences. Praise for the editors: 'Mr Watson wreaks havoc with what is accepted - and acceptable.' The Times 'One of Britain's consistently finest science fiction writers.' New Scientist

This bumper edition includes stories from Winnie Spells Trouble, Winnie Adds Magic, and Winnie the Bold. Winnie the Witch is bold and brave! In Winnie Spells Trouble there's trouble after school, trouble with Auntie Aggie, trouble with her double, and trouble in ancient Egypt. In Winnie Adds Magic Winnie's going green, going on a treasure hunt, going on stage, and going home with the class goldfish. And in Winnie the Bold she's bravely taming a tiger, mountaineering, riding a ghost train, and jousting with knights of old! Clarissa: Or, the History of a Young Lady

Description

This classic novel tells the story, in letters, of the beautiful and virtuous Clarissa Harlowe's pursuit by the brilliant, unscrupulous rake Robert Lovelace. The epistolary structure allows Richardson to create layered and fully realized characters, as well as an intriguing uncertainty about the reliability of the various "narrators." Clarissa emerges as a heroine at once rational and passionate, self-sacrificing and defiant, and her story has gripped readers since the novel's first publication in 1747-1748. This new abridgment is designed to retain the novel's rich characterizations and relationships, and reproduces individual letters in their entirety whenever possible. This Broadview Edition provides a uniquely accessible entry point for readers, while retaining much of the powerful reading experience of the complete novel.

If you're a good parent, you probably drive yourself batshit with worry. This book is for you. Addressing concerns from "my baby won't poop" to "my boy likes girl toys" to "everything costs too much," David Vienna's wise and funny parenting advice will amuse and inform-and remind you that (almost) nothing is worth freaking out about. Includes advice from actual experts! Great new dad gift that'll keep him calm, cool and collected. What is love, anyway? Ninako Kinoshita's friends tell her it's one thing, but Ninako wonders what this mysterious feeling really is. When she meets Ren Ichinose, the handsome, enigmatic guy Clarissa: Or, the History of a Young Lady download book that all the girls worship, her life takes an unexpected turn. With just a few words and a smile, he changes her world...Ando confesses his feelings to Ninako and tells her to give up on Ren-especially because there are limits to loving someone who already has a girlfriend. Meanwhile, Ren finds it harder and harder to deny his attraction to Ninako...But will Ren choose to do anything about it, particularly when his girlfriend, Mayuka, needs him?

Edwin Hutchins: Cognition in the Wild

Cognition in the Wild

Description

Edwin Hutchins combines his background as an anthropologist and an open ocean racing sailor and navigator in this account of how anthropological methods can be combined with cognitive theory to produce a new reading of cognitive science. His theoretical insights are grounded in an extended analysis of ship navigation -- its computational basis, its historical roots, its social organization, and the details of its implementation in actual practice aboard large ships. The result is an unusual interdisciplinary approach to cognition in culturally constituted activities outside the laboratory -- "in the wild." Hutchins examines a set of phenomena that have fallen in the cracks between the established disciplines of psychology and anthropology, bringing to light a new set of relationships between culture and cognition. The standard view is that culture affects the cognition of individuals. Hutchins argues instead that cultural activity systems have cognitive properties of their own that are different from the cognitive properties of the individuals who participate in them. Each action for bringing a large naval vessel into port, for example, is informed by culture: the navigation team can be seen as a cognitive and computational system. Introducing Navy life and work on the bridge, Hutchins makes a clear distinction between the cognitive properties of an individual and the cognitive properties of a system. In striking contrast to the usual laboratory tasks of research in cognitive science, he applies the principal metaphor of cognitive science -- cognition as computation (adopting David Marr's paradigm) -- to the navigation task. After comparing modern Western navigation with the method practiced in Micronesia, Hutchins explores the computational and cognitive properties of systems that are larger than an individual. He then turns to an analysis of learning or change in the organization of cognitive systems at several scales. Hutchins's conclusion illustrates the costs of ignoring the cultural nature of cognition, pointing to the ways in which contemporary cognitive science can be transformed by new meanings and interpretations. A Bradford Book
